Knitting, dyeing and finishing were two foci at this year's ShanghaiTex among many textile sectors. Telling from the machines on display at the show floor, those for knitting are having an ever increasing capacity for fashionable knit products, while their counterparts for dyeing and finishing are on the route to environment-friendliness.
Knitting: to make knit products more fashionable
Chemtax Industrial Co Ltd, an agent of multiple Italian knitting machine brands, displayed the Santoni SM4 TL2 electronic seamless wear knitting machine in a China trade fair for the first time. This machine, primarily for the production of seamless garments, lingerie, sportswear and swimwear, can also produce intarsia which can only be realized on flat knitting machines conventionally.
Santoni's Executive General Manager Tiberio Lonati, and Raymond Chu (right). | Chemtax' Managing Director Raymond Chu said that the market is seeking more fashionable elements in the sportswear, and so to live up to the trend, Santoni is adding the fishnet or anti-drop stitch structures in its SM4 TR2 model. He added that the global brands like Nike and Adidas will be adopting these features in their new collections in the coming one to two years.
Also brand new for the Chinese market was the SSG/SIG WideGauge computerized flat knitting series from Japanese Shima Seiki. Mainly available in three key models: SSG122SV, SIG122SV and SIG123SV, it offers the WideGauge functions, which allows the knitting of 7 gauge, 12 gauge and 14 gauge on one single platform, eliminating the need for the time-consuming conversion procedure. With special large-hook needles, it also offers a wide range of production possibilities from fine-gauge fibers to lower-gauge materials.
 Savio Lam.
Win Win holds a fashion show at the booth. | Savio Lam, Chairman of Win Win Industrial Co Ltd, Shimaseiki's agent for China, Hong Kong and Macau, said the SSG/SIG WideGauge, which allows multiple knit products to be produced on one machine, will be a low-investment option for fabric suppliers who handle order for small batch and of great product diversity.
He expected that the appreciation of the Chinese currency as well as the growing demand for high-quality garments in China will increase the competitiveness of imported machines. "Currently, Chinese textile manufacturers are mainly serving the export market but in fact the domestic market is also a huge market. We believe that the domestic demand will take up very soon, which will trigger the demand for new machines. Our next campaign in China will largely focus on seamless wear equipments," he added.
Specializing in socks and seamless machines, Sangiacomo brought to the show its sock machine, HT6, to test the demand in China market. HT6 is a single-cylinder six-feed machine for producing sport socks. It is designed for mass production of six-feed socks of pouched heel and toe.
Livio Rodari. | Sangiacomo's area manager, Livio Rodari, expects that the machine will arouse interests among Chinese manufacturers, who are yet to be as experienced as their counterparts in Pakistan, Turkey and the US in producing sports socks.
He says there is no machine like HT6, which produces a sock in 30 seconds, in China at the moment, and the existing machines in the world for the same kind of products rarely offer comparably high productivity level.
Dyeing and finishing: emphasis on environment
In the dyeing and finishing sector, environmental protection has been a hot issue, and machine builders are putting more attention to eco-friendly, energy-saving features. Then Mashchinen Gmbh, under the flag of Fong's Industries Company Limited, showcased the latest Then-Airflow Synergy jet dying machine, which features an improved airflow system to transport the piece goods for continuous dyeing and washing.
Then-Airflow Synergy jet dyeing machine. | Having a liquor ratio for up to 1:2.6 in the dyeing of PES/cotton material, the machine largely reduces the water consumption to 24-42L/kg from conventionally 58-86L/kg, as well as lowers the consumption of steam and electricity at the same time. The "One step leveller" that allows the premixed liquor composed of dyestuff, chemicals and salt to be applied onto the fabric in one cycle, together with the "Direct Rinse" and "Power Rinse" features, helps save dyeing time, while the "Self cleaner" filter system ensures a lint-free surface.
Also for meeting the requirement of green production, textile auxiliary supplier Proceeco Enterprises Co Ltd has incorporated the water treatment machine from Korea into its offering since the beginning of this year. Using the electro catalysis methods, the system can filter and eliminate dyestuff residues, harmful metals, grease waste, bacteria and virus found in waste water, ensuring the discharge to meet the regulation. Furthermore, together with US-based Burlington, Proceeco will develop a new series of eco auxiliary products for nylon material amid the burgeoning demand for sportswear triggered by the 2008 Olympic Games.
Hong Kong Ah Choy Machinery Works introduced the company's latest high temperature and pressure overall dyeing machines. The AGBI series features fast cycling system to ensure dyeing effects; unique design of nozzle; and special cloth grooves that allow powerful loading capacity and lower water ratio. AGBII series' characteristics include: good dyeing effects without folds; high precision production and good cloth surface. It is especially suitable for dyeing delicate materials.
Bill Guo. | The company is applying for patents for its innovation, AGJ-series high temperature hank dyeing machine, mainly used to process high temperature hank. The machine, released last year, can also process atmospheric hank.
Bill Guo, foreign trade manager, says Ah Choy, with 30 years' experience in the field, is doing well in China and also overseas countries like Vietnam, India, Bangladesh and Thailand. The company has business partners in all the markets to provide technical support to customers, which is the key to retain customers.
