Chairman Pakistan Cotton Forum (PCF) Seth Muhammad Akbar has asked the government to take urgent precautionary measures to save cotton crops from further damage. He said the cotton crop in Punjab has entered into its most crucial phase where picking of each extra boll would matter. Therefore, timely preventive measures are required to save the cotton crops.
He said agriculture advisory and extension staff be activated on war footing basis and deployed to flood affected areas to create awareness among the cotton farmers. All inputs including fertiliser, pesticides and herbicides be made available to confront any untoward attack on cotton crops, he added. The chairman PCF feared that cotton crop is likely to be trapped with boll rottening disease due to heavy rains in some areas. Therefore, timely application of recommended fungicide spray over cotton crop is badly needed.
He also expressed hope that pest management through recommended pesticides especially against armyworms and many others would be the hallmark of agriculture extension services in cotton growing areas without delay. He said extra energy and efforts to pick extra clean and dry cotton is a must to fill the national kitty at this crucial juncture of country's textile history. Further, he added, an aggressive media campaign should be launched immediately to create awareness among cotton growers about upcoming challenges regarding protection of cotton, the white gold.
The chairman PCF also expressed concerns over slow relief activities in cotton growing areas and urged the government to speed up relief activities with the help of farmers' organisations and the textile industry. He said the government should take precautionary measures including supply of necessary material and proper monitoring to save maximum agriculture crop and keep the industry wheel moving safely.
