Messe Frankfurt expected to remain profitable in 2009, but had a cautious view for next year's business performance.
Michael von Zitzewitz, Chairman of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt, predicted that consolidated sales for the entire 2009 would be 423.5 million euros, on a par with 2007.
Messe Frankfurt's 14 own events were attended by 19,000 exhibitors and 740,000 visitors in Germany. A total of 54 trade fairs were held abroad, attended by more than 850,000 visitors. The total exhibitor count was over 22,300, while the net exhibition space booked was in the region of 468,000 square metres.
Mr von Zitzewitz observed that the Group's event business in China has been encouraging. In the second half of 2009, Messe Frankfurt's Chinese trade fairs outperformed previous events in terms of almost all key figures. Prime examples of these include Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics.
He expects 2010 to be a difficult year. "The entire exhibition industry must face up to the economic and structural changes in the markets in which we offer platforms for trading and interaction."
The company will continue to streamline and optimise the organisation at its Frankfurt headquarters. It intends to boost event business both in Frankfurt and abroad, he concluded.
