The textile machinery industry has enjoyed a relatively good year so far in 2007 with substantial opportunities across Asian countries. Some economists believe that it is better for an enterprise to modernize and overhaul itself in an upswing year, rather than during the downside of an economic cycle. To a textile manufacturer, this could mean that it is time to invest in high-performance, eco-friendlier and more efficient machines so as to tap the growing market and endure threats that will come when the global economy turns unfavorable.
Against this background, the ShanghaiTex 2007, recently held in June was visited by flocks of textile machinery users who were looking for novel ways to outperform their peers. Our special report of "ShanghaiTex Review" in this issue traces the textile technology trends.
More innovations are expected in the ITMA 2007, and some of which are previewed in this edition. More than 1,450 exhibitors from 38 countries will be presenting their newest developments in the show. From September 13 to 20, the show is seen in Munich under the theme of "The Place for Innovation".
In addition to exciting trade exhibitions this year, the textile and apparel industry around the world is filled with dynamic business opportunities and challenges. Our "Market Focus" in this issue will examine the denim segment facing a global oversupply, driving enterprises to pursue higher value added products.
In the column of "China Focus", we report on the 10 most significant textile machinery technologies in China over the past two decades. They were selected by the Chinese readers of our sister journal, China Textile and Apparel, or CTA Journal, as it celebrated the silver jubilee this year. The top three technologies are eco-friendly dyes, digital ink-jet printing and seamless technology.
Recent developments in the dyeing and finishing sector, as well as natural fibers and blends, are analyzed in this edition, while the recent Techtextil exhibition is covered in the "Nonwovens/Technical Textiles" column.
