The "Fynex Fabrics" produced by Fynex Textile Technology was recognized as "Top Brand in China" in September 2007. "It was the first top national brand given to knitted fabric products," said General Manager, Joe Chan. He said a corporate strategy emphasizing on eco-friendly production and sustainable development, as well as development of high-technological fabrics for improved performance and function, were key to success.
Fujian Fynex Textile Science & Technology Co Ltd (or Fynex Textile) was established in Jingjiang city of Fujian province in 1991. Since 2004, the company has been listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

It is one of the largest circular knitting dyeing and finishing manufacturers in Fujian with a 200,000-square-meter production site, specializes in knitting, dyeing and finishing.

The main products are circular knitted fabrics and dyed yarns, used in further production of kidswear, sportswear, intimate wear and outer-wear. Some key customers are located in Fujian, whose 70%-80% of their end products are exported to Hong Kong, Middle East, Europe, North America and Japan.

Fynex has a production capacity of 100,000 spindles of cotton spinning. It annually manufactures 18,000 tons of knitted gray fabrics, cheese-dyeing colored yarns of 5,000 tons, and processed textiles 60,000 tons. The production site daily treats sewage up to 50,000 tons.

In 2006, the company achieved a sales revenue of RMB540 million, and RMB151 million of the revenue came from high-tech fabric products.

Promising future for Chinese fabrics

Although overseas buyers may get their garment making orders conducted in other cheaper Asian countries, they still prefer source fabrics in China, according to Mr Chan.

It is not only because Chinese fabrics are competitive in price and cost, but also due to the fact that some low-cost Asian countries are not necessarily equipped with modern machinery and sufficient infrastructure. They may be able to spin out good yarns, but have weak printing and finishing techniques.

More recently, in face of more stringent requirements in the European Union and other overseas markets, buyers have taken more seriously with environmental concerns, and this has benefited those leading Chinese manufacturers equipped with good sewage treatment capability.

At present, Fynex Textile cooperates with leading suppliers in the global textile industry, such as Invista, Huntsman and Intertek, and makes use of their fiber and technique offerings to better Fynex's own products.

It has been using Teflon fibers from Huntsman to produce premium functional fabrics comprising water, oil and/or soil repellent properties. These Fynex fabrics are given Teflon hangtags when finished and sent to garment manufacturers for further processing.

In order to assure quality of fabrics, Fynex Textile has improved its testing ability actively with the help of international standard body.

In October 2006, Intertek and Fynex agreed to cooperate in offering textile testing and certification services for Fujian. Intertek brought its well-established laboratory management expertise and internationally recognized service standards to the Fynex Textile Product Testing Center opened in June 2007.

Recognized by the China National Accreditation Board for Laboratories (CNAL), the center now offers testing services for up to 45 different items with regard to various international standards.

Intertek and Fynex Textile further collaborated to jointly establish the Intertek Laboratory of Quan Zhou in early 2007, which became the first internationally recognized testing and certification center in Fujian.

Fabric shows to promote brand name

After upholding fabric quality, Mr Chan understood that effective marketing would be equally important for the company and this started with a good and easy-to-recall company name.

Fynex Textile was initially called in English "Fengzhu Textile" out of simple translation from Mandarin. Overseas clients, however, found it difficult to remember or pronounce, so the company was renamed as Fynex Textile a few years ago.

Further customer-oriented strategies were unveiled by Fynex Textile in 2007.

The company held two fabric shows in 2007
In May 2007, the company held its first fabric show in its home town, Jingjiang city, and invited a number of long-term close partners including Invista, Huntsman and Intertek.

At the show, a collection of Fynex fabrics demonstrated the company's design and manufacturing capabilities. Over 150 buyers in China or from abroad came to attend the show. "We expected around 100 buyers only. The result was much more satisfactory than we had hoped, both as a strategy to sell immediately or promote our products in the long run."

Mr Chan then intensified the brand-building efforts by teaming up with Shenzhen Huafu Textile in its second fabric show this October. Fynex Textile presented three fabric ranges for fall/winter 2008, namely "iskin", "icolor" and "idear".

The "skin" is a kind of eco-friendly fabrics that keep a wearer warm, that help moisturize human skin, and/or that resist static electric charges. The "icolor" fabrics, meanwhile, offer bright colors with good colorfastness. Fynex Textile has also developed special "icolor" fabric items particularly for sportswear themed 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Additionally, the "idear" 3Es fabrics, characterized with ecological, essential and easy-to-care properties, are treated with anti-shrinkage technology, and oxidized to minimize the need for taking care.

"We put ourselves into the shoes of downstream customers in garment-making, who demand higher added value and high-technological inputs. By actively working with them as partners, we seek to jointly explore innovative ways to create value in the textile value chain," said Mr Chan.

At the moment, the profit contribution of innovative products by Fynex Textile was limited, as majority of orders received are still processed manufacturing contracts with imported materials. He, however, said that Fynex Textile sought to differentiate from its competitors with innovation and continued quality improvement.

Establishing an efficient and sustainable organization

Being an enterprise honored and nurtured under the "National Torch Program" initiated by the China Science and Technology Ministry, Fynex Textile has received recognition for operating 80% of its equipment up to international par.

Fynex Textile is able to produce premium fabrics with advanced machinery
In 2002, it adopted advanced dyeing machines from Thies and Then, dryers from BTM of Germany, as well as large-diameter circular knitting machines from Mayer & Cie and Orizio.

In enterprise resource management, the company adopted the ERP system of SAP in 2005 to effectively organize daily operations, as well as lower internal costs by managing an efficient use of raw materials, water, electricity and gas.

Fynex Textile has also established and improved its industrial sewage treatment. It has invested RMB40 million to expand its 20-mu water treatment facility in five phases that serve both the company and the local government.

Recently, the company has developed a new salt-free dyeing approach. After minimizing the use of salt, the cost of treatment drastically reduces with minimal sodium content in sewage. A low-cost water-recycling program is established.

"These investments reflect our development philosophy of sustainability under our corporate slogan of 'More contribution to social progress'," concluded Mr Chan.
