    Uster offers benchmarking tools and testers for spinners

    Uster Tester 5 has six sensors for an accurate specification of yarns. The system can determine the evenness, the number of thin places, thick places and neps, periodic mass variations, the variance-length curve, the hairiness, the remaining dust and trash particles in yarns, the diameter, the diameter variation, the density, the roundness, the number of foreign fibers and the count. Within less than one minute, it is currently possible to get detailed information to identify problems in the spinning process.

    The above graph from Uster Statistics 2007 demonstrates that the amount of neps in a cotton bale varies between 80 and 300 per gram (Neps throughout the spinning process A = bale, B = card mat, C = card sliver, D = drawframe sliver, E = comber sliver, F = Sliver, finisher drawframe, G = Roving)
    In response to requests from mill owners and spinning managers wanting to compare their own mills' quality characteristics with those of the outside world, Uster Technologies started to produce and publish benchmarks for evenness, thin places, thick places and neps since the 1950s.

    Today, the new Uster Statistics 2007 represent benchmarks for seven laboratory systems, and the user can find the following benchmarks:

  • Quality characteristics for cotton fibers;

  • Changes of fibers properties within the entire spinning process;

  • Quality characteristics of slivers, rovings and yarns; and

  • Relationships between fiber and yarn characteristics.
