The growth of the textile industry in Asia has been a double-edged sword. While the region is now a major supplier of textile goods to the world market, the rapid advancement has brought about pollution problems. China, the world factory, has been warned of the potential danger in continuing its current development mode: analysts predicted that the country would exhaust its resources in less than 15 years if it does not start getting on the right track. In its 11th Five-year Plan period beginning this year, the Chinese government has put emphasis on sustainable growth, and implemented new measures to make enterprises pay more attention to green manufacturing. Likewise, India and Indonesia in South Asia are also tightening control on textile manufacturing processes concerning energy and water supplies.
Last year, Germany has maintained its position as leading supplier of textile machinery and accessories in the world with an export value of 3.4 billion euros despite a slight drop in exports by 5.3 % year-on-year. Asia led the list of German exports with a share of 46% and a turnover of 1.6 billion euros. China is now the key buyer in Asia, but the VDMA Textile Machinery Association expects further sales growth to other countries like India, Thailand and Indonesia in the coming years. "German supplement" introduces a number of German suppliers while giving an update on the Asian market for their products.
Offering the latest technologies for the textile industry, the four-day ShanghaiTex 2006 will kick off on July 5 in Shanghai, China. The event this year will focus more on the fast-growing sectors of the Chinese textile industry, such as knitting, dyeing and finishing. And shortly before ShanghaiTex, a show targeting the textile industry in the Middle East, ITM 2006, will be staged for six days from June 27 in Istanbul, Turkey. Key exhibitors and their exhibits of the two events are highlighted in this issue for your early preview.
