The production of nonwovens appears to be booming and opens to further growth possibilities in different application markets, and this is the context in which Italian textile machinery companies can play a leading role in the development of the sector, says ACIMIT.
ACIMIT estimates that about 50 members companies are involved in the production of machinery for nonwovens. This sector is observing a steadily growing turnover, accounting for about 10% on the total turnover of Italian textile machinery industry.
"Nowadays the majority of Italian builders of textile machinery are getting new developments in the field of sustainability and energy savings," stresses Federico Pellegata, Director of ACIMIT.
In order to support them, ACIMIT, in co-operation with D'Appolonia, a consulting engineering company, is implementing a project called 'sustainable technologies'.
He adds that the project aims is to create a 'green tag' on which the Italian manufacturer can declare the energy/environmental specifications of each machine produced.
ACIMIT's headquarters in Milan | Adding values to products
In modern times, textile industries over the world need to create items with more added-value than they did in the past in order to compete in a challenging market, says ACIMIT. Consequently the providers of technologies are requested to offer to potential customers a supply characterized by a more high technological level.
According to the association, the challenge for the Italian industry stays advancing the technological level via constant R&D. "Italian suppliers are well-known for the reliability and versatility of their machines that are built on the specific needs of the single customer. In the western countries, many textile companies are shifting the own production from traditional textiles to technical and innovative items. So the request for the supply of technologies is more demanding. The challenge for the Italian companies is to be on the upper level of technology through a constant activity of research," notes Mr Pellegata.

According to ACIMIT, preliminary 2010 data show a decisive recovery under way for Italy's textile machinery sector, in the wake of 2009 which had been marked by a conspicuous drop in production.
Mr Pellegata explains that in terms of value, Italy's textile machinery production recorded an 18% increase with respect to 2009, from 1.9 billion euros to 2.3 billion euros. Exports drew a similarly favorable increase at 19%, reaching a value of just under 1.8 billion euros.
"Even though more uncertainty still characterizes 2011, we are confident in a further growth of the major markets, namely China, India and Turkey. Thus our sector should also register improving business conditions."
